Dr. James L. Wallace
Pastor, Head of Staff
503-639-3273 Ext. 105 Office
Dr. Wallace received his Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry in Preaching from McCormick Theological Seminary, Chicago, and was awarded the Hunt Prize for outstanding D. Min. thesis.
Dr. Wallace broadly describes his vision for a vital church. That the church:
- will be warm and supportive of its members, joyous in its communal life, but always inclusive, open and welcoming.
- will respond with compassion to human need; yet strive for justice by challenging those structures that hinder all God’s children.
- will not only search for answers to the quandaries of life, but will endeavor to figure out the right questions that need to be asked.
- will seek foremost to become a living, breathing communal embodiment of Jesus in the world—forgiving, loving, healing, proclaiming—while graciously caring for organizational needs.
- will deeply love its Presbyterian heritage of an ordered theology and governance, yet welcome the ardor of the Spirit to create fresh ministries and refocus congregational life.
About Sunday morning, he writes: “For someone who is a preacher, there is no better moment in the week than when the church assembles for worship, the scripture is read, the sermon is preached, and a kind of hush descends upon the congregation as people lean forward, actively listen, and find their lives addressed by the gospel.”
Jim has been married to Anne for 31 years. Anne is an R.N., B.S.N. who has more recently worked as a licensed massage therapist. In their free time they enjoy spending time outdoors, a good round of golf, travel, and sharing a meal with friends. They are the proud parents of three daughters— Lindsay, Laney and Lauren—all living and working in New York City.
Pastor of Congregational Care

Pastor Tim comes to Calvin Presbyterian Church as the Pastor of Congregational Care in March of 2014. Though coming with a Congregational Church background (10 year senior pastorate in Wyoming, 20 year senior pastorate in New Hampshire), Tim and his wife, Jeanne felt right at home the first time they walked through Calvin’s doors. Tim received his BA from Occidental College in Los Angeles, his M.Div. from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, and has completed year on of his D.Min at Multnomah Biblical Seminary in Portland.
Although his triathlon days are behind him, Tim still enjoys cycling, running and swimming, as well as tennis, golf, and… fishing! Jeanne enjoys gardening, canning fruits and vegetables, cooking, and also with Tim, spending time with the two of their four grandchildren who live nearby. Both Tim and Jeanne are passionate about sharing the joy of knowing Christ with their neighbors and church family.
Sue Van Stelle
Director of Children’s Ministry

Hi, everyone! I am so excited to be the new Director of Children’s Ministry here at Calvin Pres. I love working with children of all ages, as well as working with the young at heart. Often I find it’s not that I have so much to teach kids, it’s that I have so much to learn from them. Perhaps this is why Jesus recommended that we become like little children to enter the kingdom of heaven. I’ve been involved with children and youth for several years now, first as a classroom teacher, and for about the past twelve years in children and youth ministry. In the recent past I was also dean of our Presbytery’s 5th/6th grade camp. One thing that I have in common with kids is that I am (still) in school. I am on the snail’s pace track of getting an MDiv at George Fox Seminary, while picking up specifically Presbyterian classes from Dubuque Theological Seminary. There are now two “Calvins” in my life — I have a daughter who is a freshman at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI. My younger daughter is a freshman at Gladstone High School, and my husband Paul is a therapist at Western Psychological and Counselling Services. When I am not working, studying or hanging out with my family, I enjoy photography, hiking, reading, and nerdy word games.
It was great to hear the children’s choir in March and meet a few of you. I am so looking forward to getting to know the kids and their families, as well as the extended Calvin family. Lots of fun, learning, and growing in faith happen in children’s ministry, so let me know if you’re interested in getting in on the action! And please don’t hesitate to introduce yourself to me more than once as I learn to put faces with names. Thanks!

Ryan has a very laid back personality with a strong passion for Jesus Christ and His Kingdom. He considers himself a native Portlander through he was born a few miles to the south in California. Ryan graduated college from Portland State University and has been involved in Youth Ministry for over 10 years. Ryan also has about 3 years of experience working with InterVarsity campus fellowship at the PSU campus working directly with college students leading various bible studies.
On a personal side, Ryan has been married to Tricia for 8 years and together they have 3 children: Nick, Micah, and Finley. When he isn’t at church, he is with his own kids. He used to be involved in extreme sports such as skydiving, motorcycling, and snowboarding, but has tamed his lifestyle down quite a bit to make room for the more important things in life (family and sleep).
His likes Apple computers, wears Crocs, and plays video games on his phone. He doesn’t like people who aren’t genuine or people don’t have an interest in learning more about what life has to teach them.
